Will decides to stay in Bishopthorpe

The Radleys

Will Radley decides to remain in Bishopthorpe with Helen Radley, a choice that turns his attention away from Manchester and its vampire cliques toward the life he can share with her. The decision is presented not as a speech but as a quiet shift in what matters to him.

The Decision

After letting someone go, Will gets up and looks through the records on a dull brown jukebox mounted on the wall. He selects the Rolling Stones’ Under My Thumb, then lies down on the seat where he had been sitting. People notice, but no one comments. As the music plays, he feels that everything has become clear.

What He Leaves Behind

Will no longer cares about Manchester. Isobel Child, The Black Narcissus, the Sheridan Society, and the blood cliques associated with that world have also lost their importance to him. The list makes the scale of his change plain: the decision is not simply about where to live, but about withdrawing his attention from the places and affiliations that had occupied it.

Staying with Helen

Will’s resolve is to stay in Bishopthorpe with Helen and hope for a second eclipse of the sun. The scene closes on that hope rather than on any practical plan or assurance of what will follow. His choice gives the moment its force: after setting aside his former concerns, he commits himself to remaining with Helen.
